WHAT IS CGC ?

Started in 1989, the CGC Program (Canine good citizen) is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events.

Following your 5 hours basic training program this specific training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with-they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life. We sincerely hope that CGC will be only a beginning for you and your dog and that after passing the CGC test, you’ll continue training in obedience, agility, tracking, or performance events.

This class is specifically designed to prepare you and your dog for the Canine Good Citizen evaluation and award. Each class will review and provide” hands on” time to practice the exercises required to pass the test. Some of the exercises are; sitting politely to be petted, meeting a stranger, or interaction with another dog. We use positive reinforcement training techniques to create a fun and non confrontational learning environment.

This class is a 6 week class (one hour sessions) and will be scheduled in a group setting. The 6th week will be used for testing only. All classes are held at Sunview park at 10a .m. every Saturday after the basic obedience class. Cost for the 6 hours is $159 including the CGC test itself. In this class we will work on the ten essential points of the CGC test:

1: Accepting a friendly stranger
This test demonstrates that the dog will allow a friendly stranger to approach it and speak to the handler in a natural, everyday situation.
2: Sitting politely for petting
The dog will allow a friendly stranger to touch it while it is out with its handler.

3: Appearance and grooming
The dog will welcome being groomed and examined and will permit someone, such as a veterinarian, groomer or friend of the owner.

4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
The handler must show that he is in control of the dog. The dog may be on either side of the handler. The dog’s position should leave no doubt that the dog is attentive to the handler and is responding to the handler’s movements and changes of direction.

5: Walking through a crowd
The dog must demonstrates that he can that he can move about politely in pedestrian traffic and is under control in public places.

6: Sit and down on command and Staying in place
The dog must show that he has training, will respond to the handler’s commands to sit and down and will remain in the place commanded by the handler (sit or down position, whichever the handler prefers). The dog must do sit AND down on command, then the owner chooses the position for leaving the dog in the stay.

7: Coming when called
The dog will come when called by the handler.

8: Reaction to another dog
This test demonstrates that the dog can behave politely around other dogs.

9: Reaction to distraction
The dog show that he is confident at all times when faced with common distracting situations.

10: Supervised separation
The dog will be left with a trusted person and will maintain training and good manners.

Before taking the Canine Good Citizen test, owners will sign the Responsible Dog Owners Pledge.

Note: If you feel confident that your dog is ready you don’t have to take the 5 hours training to take the test. You can simply call us for an appointment and we will schedule a date and time for you. (Cost is $25)
